Health Tip 5: Stranded in Snow

You've become stuck while trying to make it home through a winter storm.

Now what do you do?

Foremost, stay in your car, advises the Medical College of Wisconsin. Don't leave to look for help unless help is visible within 100 yards.

Here are additional suggestions:

*Display a trouble sign. Tie a brightly colored cloth on the radio antenna and, if the engine is already cold, raise the hood.
*Move anything you need from the trunk into the passenger area, then wrap your body in whatever is handy to help maintain body heat.
*Try not to stay in one position for too long. As you sit, improve your circulation by performing minor exercises like clapping or moving your arms and legs.
*Run the motor and car heater for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one downwind window slightly to let in air. Keep the tailpipe clear of snow to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
